Homeless youth in Vancouver generally don’t get enough food to eat, and the food they do get is often not very nutritious. At Directions, we are working to improve nutrition for homeless and youth at-risk, and help these youth develop the skills to nourish themselves.
Changing How Homeless Youth Think About Food
We provide drop-in meals, including a nightly hot meal produced largely with food diverted from the landfill. When we have more of a certain item than we can use, we offer it to youth so they can supplement their diet with fruits and vegetables. Our cooking series teaches food skills, and we work with youth on shopping, budgeting, learning about healthier food, while youth interested in working around food find a place in our kitchen.
