We invite you to join a select group.
On April 6, 2017, these people will experience Vancouver streets through the eyes of homeless youth—and raise funds to help change their lives.
“eye-opening and humbling…” Geoff Brooks, ANITL 2015 participant
Participants will take a youth-led tour of a typical day on the streets, test their luck in a homeless survival simulator game, then sleep out on the street as a group. The event raises awareness and funds to support the life-changing work done with homeless and at-risk youth at Directions Youth Services Centre.
Vancouver’s Most Vulnerable Youth
In 2014, 410 youth (aged 15-24) were counted living on Vancouver streets and in temporary shelters. The actual number, which includes youth living in unsafe or precarious situations, is far higher. These youth are among the most vulnerable in our society. They are three times more likely to be physically and/or sexually abused than youth the same age in school and/or safe living environment. It’s estimated that 40% are aboriginal, and 30% identify as LGBTQ2S.
“What really struck me the most was how difficult it was to get a income, food, and housing. I couldn’t believe all the barriers…“ Debbie Gardiner, ANITL 2015 participant
How Directions Helps
We work with the most vulnerable youth on Vancouver streets who need help the most. We offer a warm, dry, safe place off streets, where these youth can get a meal, take a shower, wash their clothes and feel human again.
As youth spend time at Directions, they get to know and trust our staff. Staff can then help them with their next steps, whether that’s finding a place to live, getting into detox, or resuming their education. Many of the youth we work with end up leaving the streets and living healthy, productive lives.
“I’m alive today thanks to a Directions’ staffer. He saw me in a back alley after his shift and stayed with me
until I checked into detox 8 hours later.” homeless youth
We make a difference for these youth every day. (Read a touching note we got from a youth we worked with here.) With your support, we can do much more.
